Sweet Sixteen

Oh, how sweet of a run it was! I’m pretty spoiled here in Southern California…

With rain predicted, I laced up my sneakers fairly early this morning, though not as early as some runs! I didn’t want to be caught in the rain even though it isn’t really a factor for me! šŸ˜‰

I hyped myself all week long for today’s 16 miles.

Today was great because not only was it a new milestone for me, but I took it to the pavement with my mom, also.

She is my hero.

My mom and I are best friends. We love going on adventures together and I am inspired by all the obstacles she has overcome in her life.

After signing up for the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon, my mom and dad both decided to sign up for the Rock ‘N’ Roll 1/2 Marathon! I could not be any more excited for them. They never used to like running, and now they go for runs all the time training for the half together. My parents and I are always giving each other constant support to push ourselves in running.

Facing the run this morning, I remembered something we discussed this week in my philosophy class.

Lao Tzu (570-510 BCE) was a philosopher who spent his entire life pursuing “the way”, or virtue, also known as Tao. To Lao Tzu, this was found through direct acquaintance with nature and education. He tried explaining his vision through the 5 Taoist principles. One of the five was wu wei which translates to effortlessness. Through the wu wei, the thought process becomes part of you; you do not show any signs of strain, struggle, or frustration. This was my focus for the run – to go with the current and just do it.

Almost right after I started my run, I found that I was already at mile 8. I ended up getting so caught up in the beautiful weather, the sky, and the ocean near by that I finished at 16.93 miles. A little over but I guess that is what happens when you are absorbing your environment!

I even came across a small lot with rows of green and red lettuce growing. šŸ˜€ It was very ironic seeing this. Earlier this week I was feeling uninspired, so I told my friend Nicky I was going to go out on my run and envision all the houses with beautiful lush organic gardens. I guess my wish kind of came true today!

My mom didn’t run with me this morning because we both has different paces. She finished a 6.5 mile run this morning! We were able to finish our runs before the rain, it was worth celebrating…

We went to a cute place nearby called The Lotus Cafe and Juice Bar, for lunch.

My mom and I split a bowl of lentil soup, and a char-broiled eggplant sandwich.

My legs are definitely hating me now, so it’s time for me to kickback and relax with some comfy clothes and homework šŸ™‚ And it looks as though Max has beat me at taking a nap..

Have a good rest of your weekend!
